The West Clare Grey Limestone Building & Walling Stone is a great stone for building " dry finish " in particular. Good examples are Barry's Pub in Douglas Village, Cork City, The Carlton Hotel in Kinsale, Cork, Luxury Houses in Killeen Castle Golf Course, Dunshaughlin , Co. Meath, Trim Castle Hotel, Meath, we also built it with a lime mortar and combined it with old red salvage brick in Glaslough Village , beside Castle Leslie, County Monaghan. The one thing in common with all these projects is that it was selected for use in front of or beside some of Ireland's most important heritage and historical sites. Quite a testimony to the " West Clare Grey Limestone Building & Walling Stone" . It's worth while checking out the Dry Stone Walling Association Of Ireland's website set up by our good friend Ken Curran and Tom Pollard and friends www.dswaireland.ning.com , it gives practical advice on dry stone walling and well done to everyone on reviving this vital part of our ancient heritage!
In www.wesellstone.com we love any opportunity to head down to West Clare and view all the beautiful stone walls, old cow sheds with Liscannor Slate Roofs etc with a Red White Head Heifer looking out through the half door! ( some images would make great McDonald's adverts!! ) , we can learn so much about proportions or size of stone used etc. how they incorporated the corner stones or quoin stones , the use of levellers shims ( approx. 1" or 25mm thick ) etc to tighten the stones joints together , resulting in a secure , safe wall.
Our craftsmen in www.wesellstone.com make sure the stone is dressed using the same technique of splitting the stone with Roman Chisels as over 100 years ago. The result is a beautiful blend of size, colour, texture etc.
